Chapter Twenty-Eight

ADAM

For the first time, I was beginning to get a good picture of why my brother-in-law Harry didn’t seem to mind traveling.

He didn’t much like the small town of Whiskey Springs.

Harry wasn’t from here. He was from Denver, but he loved my sister and she loved

Whiskey Springs. He loved her enough for them to make their home here.

After I got Harry and my sister buckled in and settled as well as possible for a pregnant woman having contractions, I got myself harnessed into the pilot’s seat.

My sister was uncharacteristically quiet. I had a feeling that was part of why Harry wanted to get her to a larger hospital.

He thought something was wrong. I was not inclined to disagree with him. We both thought she would have been screaming at Harry by now.

I went through my preflight checklist, happily falling into my role as pilot.

It had been a few days since I had been in the cockpit and it felt good to be back in the pilot’s seat.

According to the flight plan filed by Donna at the Skye Travels Dallas office, while I drove to the airport, we would land at the Denver airport in thirty minutes including taxiing time.

From there we would need another thirty minutes driving time to the hospital.

So approximately one hour to get from Whiskey Springs to the Denver hospital. It would take at least that long just to drive down to Boulder on the winding mountain roads.

Besides, flying was much safer. Natalie was certainly a case in point on that matter.

I taxied out to the runway and since there were no other airplanes around, took off, quickly getting into the air.

Just as I had been thinking earlier, it was a beautiful day for flying. The sun was bright and the sky was a clear blue with just a few clouds clustering around the mountain peaks.

As I circled around, banking low to head East, I caught sight of the St. Clair Estate below.

Natalie would be down there somewhere, hopefully making it home okay.

It had felt so right to be with her today. We’d been having a delightful time.

We’d been having a nice conversation at least until I had mentioned her being married to Markus. I had not been serious. I would never ever wish that on her.

Markus was just plain weird.

The way he’d looked at me in the General Store was just one more reason to believe that he was indeed Natalie’s stalker.

It seemed like the police would have done something to stop the gifts. And yet they had not.

The St. Clair family home was doubtless safe, but I still didn’t like her being there alone. I felt much better when her family was around her.

I should have brought her with me.

Coulda. Woulda. Shoulda.

Those seemed to be three words that kept coming to mind when it came to Natalie.

I had not been thinking clearly. Harry’s phone call had surprised me and I’d had to act fast.

Still. I had left Natalie alone. And, I thought, kicking myself, I’d left her to pay the bill for lunch.
